In the fall of 2004, Dr. Vilma Seeberg undertook a research trip to rural northwest China. There she visited 16 schools and explored the challenges facing girls who wanted an education. She was joined by her family for a remarkable 6 week journey covering over 46,000 kilometers, through three provinces. These are some of the images from that trip. The family also produced a 30 minute video documentary of their journey. We invite you to view: Zoë Guanlan's Sisters (click on title to view) |
Guanlan Scholarship Sisters In 2004, our family got to meet several of the "Guanlan Scholarship Sisters," and hear their stories.
Future Musicians! Some of the better schools provide musical training for their students. But these schools are few and far between in rural China.
Women's work Without an education, little girls will end up like their mothers, working in the fields or an road gangs like these women.
Eager to learn Throughout our journey we were inspired by the determination of the children to receive an education against overwhelming odds.

China, 2010
Since our visit to the Guanlan Sisters in 2004, our family has dreamed of returning to China to visit the girls and their families in their home village of An Jing Gou. We realized our dream in July of 2010 and it was a wonderful experience that connected us to our Chinese "daughters" in ways we could not have imagined! These are some images from the remote, but beautiful village of An Jing Gou.
